Ugh. Why me? Why me, out of all the millions of people in the
world? Why did I, Chloe Jones, have to go to a boring old school SCIENCE FAIR
with my parents? I mean, come on, a science fair? It is an outrage. Whatever
saddo freak invented science fairs deserves to be shot. Whichever one of our
teachers decided we needed to have science fair in the first pace NEEDS to
be shot! Thankfully, Danny and Jessica, my two best friends were going to
be there.
They had this science project thing that they simply WOULD NOT tell me about.
All Danny had told me was that his dad Dr. Bourne, who was a professor/scientist/clever
person, had helped them with it. When I asked why they hadn't invited me to
their little 'party' Danny and Jessica had looked at each other and simultaneously
mimicked, "Ooh, science fair - Boooooooooooring!" which, the previous month
when it had been announced that there was to be a science fair, I had said.
Back to us. First, there's me. My name is Chloe Jones and I am very nearly
13 years old (on the fourteenth of October, to be exact!). I have very obvious
bright red hair (long story) and glasses, much to my annoyance. Then there's
Jessica. She's a year below me at school, but she's just like me! She has
long brown hair and a nose stud. She will believe anything you tell her and
laughs a lot. Finally, Danny. Well, what can I say? GORGEOUS! Jessica and
I are both madly in love with him. He's in my form, but he's half my size!
He has got the most AMAZING blue eyes. They really are amazing!
So, there we were at this science fair, creating as much havoc as possible,
when I got a creepy feeling someone was watching us. I span around to see
who it was. I had forgotten, of course, that I had my new, non grip boots
on. I spun too quickly for my boots liking, and slipped, luckily, Danny saw
and caught me. But he didn't catch me in time to stop me grabbing hold of
someone's science project to stop myself from falling. He didn't catch me
in time to stop me grabbing hold of someone's RED ANT FARM science project
to stop myself from falling. There was a loud crash, followed by a flurry
of little red dots, followed by over a hundred people screaming and running
in all different directions. The red ant science fair project owner glared
at me. He started to walk around his table towards me.
"RUN!" I yelled at the other two. So we did.
We darted through the chaotic crowd, dodging and diving at every possible
opportunity, not only to avoid being thwacked over the head by some parent
flapping about like a headless chicken trying to protect their children and
get away from the fast advancing army of red ants at the same time, but so
that we could lose the angry science person trying to catch me. We skidded
to a halt down a seemingly empty corridor.
"What on earth was all that about?" asked Jessica, slightly bewildered after
being dragged through a crowd of hundreds of screaming people.
"I got that weird feeling that someone was watching us, so I -" Danny grabbed
my arm.
"I got that too, and now I've got it again!" We all three span around, to
see a dark figure walking toward us…
"And what, pray, are you three doing here? This is a school, not a playground.
Perhaps you would like to come with me?"
