Bears on the Stairs is about a child who is scared to go to bed. Julia Jarman’s story is written in the first person and so never makes reference to whether the child is a boy or girl; which meant I could choose.
My first inclination was to do a little girl. I thought she would look cute:
Then, thinking about it longer, I realised something unfortunate, but nevertheless important: whilst girls will happily read stories featuring either girls or boys, boys are not so keen on stories which don’t have boys in keys roles. So, to maximise our audience, I illustrated the story through the eyes of this little boy instead:
