In 1987 I travelled around China for six weeks. It was probably the most fascinating, but also the most difficult trip I have done, as independant travellers were still fairly unusual at that time. Sketching was also interesting: as a Westerner I was already a novelty everywhere outside of central Beijing, but when I started to draw I was instantly surrounded by a crowd, blocking out what I was attempting to sketch!
