I liked to travel in Eastern Europe when I was younger: the mystery of the Eastern Block held a fascination for me. It meant too that I could get by on my school German, as that was generally the second language throughout. It was also handy that, at a time when I didn't have much money, what I could scrape together always went further in that part of the world.
